Review: MIYU Beauty Hydrating MI Beauty Essence #MIYU

miyu beauty hydrate essence and teaMIYU is the first brand to pair skincare with tea. The founder, Connie Tai, moved from Canada to New York and realized her dream of making a skincare line in 2003. She had made dozens of products for other companies but had longed for her own line, especially since her hectic lifestyle was taking its toll on her skin. Nothing seemed to calm her skin, so she set out to try and find something that would. While researching her line she found out that 20% of the aging process is due to genetics and 80% is due to external factors such as stress, poor diet, and UV exposure. She wanted to bridge the gap between products that were working on the outside and that could work on the inside too.

MIYU does this by drawing inspiration from traditional Chinese medicine. She wanted to pair teas with the skincare products. Taken from the name ‘mei yuan’, MIYU refers to the origins of beauty. It reminds us to feel confident in our own skin. Beauty is not only influenced by our own genes but by our environment and our emotional state of mind. MIYU products are suitable for all skin types and contain essences and beauty teas which encourage happier, brighter and covetable complexions. Every bottle of MIYU beauty essence contains Asian botanicals that combine the freshness of a facial mist with the nutrients of a serum. Each ingredient in MIYU’s premium whole leaf beauty teas have been carefully chosen for their skin enhancing benefits. The flavor pairings are designed to target lifestyle concerns and will boost your skincare ritual. For example, the hydrate mi pairing is great for dehydrated complexions while the de-stress mi pairing is great to calm the skin.

The core of the products contain the following ingredients: green tea for skin protection, white peony for radiance and pearl for preservation of youth. There are no irritating ingredients in the products, so that even the most irritated skins can use them. They are also free of parabens, phthalates, sulphates, synthetic dyes, and synthetic fragrances. The products are never tested on animals, and are Leaping Bunny certified.

There are two core products in the collection, the hydrate mi essence with its corresponding tea pairing and the de-stress mi essence with its corresponding tea pairing. I was sent the hydrate mi beauty essence and tea pairing to try out. The hydrate mi essence is specifically formulated to be like a serum but goes on like a facial mist. It contains goji berries and mangosteen, which are antioxidants (to help protect against free radicals). It provides a surge of hydration to the skin. This product is great for those who are not drinking enough water during the day, are drinking way too much caffeine, live in dry climates or have dehydrated skin (for example: from peels). It is similar to other products like this that have come out lately. When sprayed on the face I find it to be very refreshing and truly hydrating. It truly works! I use it right before serums. Spray and then pat on to skin and you will find that it does indeed leave skin feeling hydrated. If your skin is in need of moisture it will suck it all in! It can also be used over makeup to refresh the face during the day. The tea is loaded up with an antioxidant blend of green rooibos (an excellent free radical fighter), goji berries (gives a generous dose of Vitamin C and helps with collagen production), rose petals and snow pear. The company notes that it is best to have the tea with the essence. I have found that hard, as I am usually using it when I am on the go. I like to drink my tea after dinner. For me the tea was good. I think the addition of the rose petals made it very nice.

All of these can be found on www.miyubeauty.com:

  • The hydrate mi essence is $16.00 for 80 ml / 2.7 fl. oz.
  • The hydrate mi tea is $16.00 for 16 sachets / 40 g
  • The hydrate mi essence and tea is beauty essence pairing is $42.00 80 for ml / 2.7 fl. oz,; beauty tea 16 sachets / 40 g

MIYU also sells de-stress mi beauty essence and tea pairing. The de-stress mi beauty essence contains peppermint, dandelion, ginger, licorice and honeysuckle to help calm the skin all while neutralizing free radicals. There are 5 essential minerals that work to soothe the skin and repair its barrier. It is $34.00 for 80 ml / 2.7 fl. oz.; the de-stress mi beauty tea is a blend of peppermint, licorice and chamomile blossoms to boost anti-inflammatory properties in stressed out complexions. The de-stress mi beauty tea is $16.00 for 16 sachets / 40 g. The de-stress mi pairing is $42.00 for beauty essence: 80 ml / 2.7 fl. oz.; beauty tea: 16 sachets / 40 g. I really want to try this one, the ingredients make it sound quite interesting!

I think Connie Tai has succeeded in her quest. The hydrate mi essence makes my face feel more hydrated and I like it. And just by trying this one I want to try the other!
