FryFace.com: An Unbiased Site For Skincare #FryFace

fryfaceDr. Fayne Frey is a well known dermatologist who started FryFace for an unbiased view of skincare concerns. She has been asked many, many times, “Dr. Frey, what is the best moisturizer?” This has led to a site that lists OTC (over-the-counter) skincare products with how they perform selected by the scientific method. FryFace is a combination of formulation, skin barrier function (the skin’s ability to protect itself from chemicals, bacteria and water loss) and the desire to give her patients a rational method by which they could select an appropriate skincare product for themselves based on science.

FryFace is unique for many reasons. Dr. Frey does not have any interest in any product on the site. Her opinion is truly unbiased and she bases her recommendation on science and medical literature. She offers a Product Selector that helps consumers select products based on their individual needs. For example, say someone has sensitive skin. This person can select a product that is “fragrance-free” and is for “sensitive-skin” only.  Say someone has acne. This person can use filters for ingredients that are known to cause or worsen the condition. The type of dispenser can also be selected, which is very unique to this site. People often prefer a pump dispenser, while others prefer jars or bottles and some tubes. All final searches list the number of ingredients, with the products having the fewest ingredients coming back first. Scientific literature seems to show that products with fewer ingredients lessen the chance of an allergic reaction to that product. FryFace also offers educational information on moisturization of the skin, sunscreen facts and information on anti-aging creams (what they are, and what they REALLY do).
The products she has on FryFace are those everyday products based on price and how available they are. There is no scientific evidence available to show that more expensive creams do a better job than less expensive ones. She doesn’t tell her patients to buy more expensive creams. There are not more expensive creams listed on the site. FryFace is listed in layman’s terms so that everyone can understand. Dr. Frey has the Product Selector set up to have it help the consumer in selecting a product before they visit a retail shop so that it eliminates the task of staring at the daunting “wall” of products available in stores these days.

3 things the consumer needs to know:
1) There is no Foundation of Youth. Based on scientific research, the average OTC moisturizer hydrates the skin and that is pretty much it. The cream might decrease fine lines but it is a temporary hydrating effect only. People spend their live savings on products that don’t work. Mistake #1: Don’t purchase a very expensive cream that does not do more than hydrate the skin. You would be better off purchasing a quality product from a local pharmacy.

2) Sunscreen is a Magic Potion. It prevents 90% of sun spots, wrinkles and saggy skin. It is sold everywhere yet only 1 in 10 Americans actually applies it daily. Scientific evidence shows that compared to other OTC products the most effective skincare product is sunscreen. Mistake #2: Most people are not applying sunscreen daily when they should be. SPF 30 or higher!

3)The skin has an amazing ability to hydrate itself. It produces lipids (such as sebum) and proteins to help maintain adequate water content so that it stays soft and supple. Most people are using too many things that strip the skin of these lipids and proteins Mistake #3: The use of too many products.

I went through the Product Selector to see which products would be selected for my needs. First I picked Moisturizer. Then I picked Face, and then you can select filters for Product Preferences such as Without Sunscreen, Fragrance Free and Marketed For Anti-aging, eczema and Dispenser. I picked with sunscreen and Anti-aging. It came back with Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 30, RoC® Retinol Correction Deep Wrinkle Daily Moisturizer with Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 30, Neutrogena Ageless Intensives Tone Correcting Daily Moisturizer SPF 30 – Tinted and Neutrogena® Ageless Intensives Tone Correcting Daily Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 30. I happen to adore the Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair. It is one of my favorites because it seems to actually work. And it comes at a reasonable price (~$20). Its main ingredients are retinol and hyaluronic acid. Retinol is good for helping with fine lines and wrinkles as it is a good exfoliant and hyaluonic acid is a good moisturizer and helps to keep the skin nice and plump.

I think that the website is a nice way to get good advice if you are having some problems with picking out your skincare products. Her products are limited to OTC drugstore only though. As I mentioned, she does not recommend higher end lines. That is fine, as Neutrogena and RoC and good lines. I do, however, still like some of the more high end lines and feel they do work. It is important to remember that she is right, sunscreen is the first line of defense in anti-aging. Then good ingredients such as hyaluronic acid are very helpful. There are other ways to look younger but they require a Rx or surgery!
