Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) are a great way to help get rid of extraneous dead skin cells that clog up the pores (hair follicles), to help speed up cell turnover, decrease fine lines & wrinkles and help boost collagen synthesis in the skin. The type of AHA you use depends on your skin type, as there are several. One I like to use for my dry skin and that works well for daily use is Lactic Acid.
The one I like is The Ordinary Lactic Acid 10% + HA. It offers a mild exfoliation of the skin and has a purified Tasmanian pepperberry known to reduce the signs of inflammation and sensitivity that is often associated with exfoliation. They also offer an even milder 5% formula for those who cannot tolerate this level. The Tasmanian pepperberry derivative helps to reduce irritation associated with acid usagee. Because it varies in colour and season this will show up in the formula from time to time. Lactic Acid should not be use on sensitive, peeling or compromised skin types. This formula has a pH level of approximately 3.8. Lactic Acid has a pKa of 3.8 and pKa is the most important aspect to consider when formulating acids. pKa implies acid availability. When pKa is close to the pH level, there is an ideal balance between the salt and acidity level, maximizing its effectiveness and reducing irritation. A higher pH would increase the irritation of the acid. Lactic Acid can result in quick visible benefits, the chemists at Deciem suggest indirect forms of skin exfoliation in favor of direct forms such as this formula due to its potential for inflammation and sensitivity. This formula also contains humectants such as glycerin and sodium hyaluronate to help decrease its drying effects on the skin.
To use: apply once per day, ideally in the pm. It can be diluted with other treatments to reduce the strength until skin develops tolerance. Avoid contact with eyes. Contact with skin must be of limited duration or frequency. If irritation occurs, cease use and consult a physician. Use only as directed on unbroken skin. Patch testing is advised. Also be advised to wear sunscreen ALL THE TIME during the day when using this product. It causes sensitivity to the sun. Limit sun exposure.
I will admit to having a lot of experience with AHAs. So I am not surprised that upon using this my skin began to peel almost immediately. I was very happy actually, because that is what I was going for. I am going to be 50 in April and want a beautiful glowing complexion that only AHAs can provide. This one is very good. I apply it and leave it on all night long. After about 2 days of consecutive use I noticed severe peeling. So much that wearing foundation looked pretty bad. What I did was to exfoliate the extraneous skin with a washcloth while cleansing and use a sunscreen. The peeling only lasts a couple of days, so you just have to live with it. In the end though skin looks great, glowing and fresh.

I would recommend this product for skin that is normal to dry. If your skin is sensitive, do not used this product. Also, if your skin is oily or acneic, you are better off using another AHA, something like salicylic acid, which is better off suited to skin that is oily.
