Probiotics are a great way to help the body's microbiome. Everybody has a microbiome that is capable of keeping your body's entire flora/fauna in check. Without it, we would not be able to function. It is just now that most scientists are realizing the importance of the connection between the body's microbiome and how we function. The skin's microbiome helps to protect our body from invaders, and it actually functions as small ecosystem. When is does not function well, rashes and diseases start to pop up, such as yeast infections, eczema, etc. Skincare companies are starting to realize the benefit of helping to maximize the function of the skin's microbiome by putting probiotics in skincare products. I tried one product by Dermalogica, called Active Moist and you can read on for my review.

Dermalogica Active Moist is a lightweight white gel-cream moisturizer with a  Probiotic Moisture Complex for normal to combination skin. It has a sheer and easy to apply formula that helps to improve surface texture and combats surface dehydration. The formula contains botanical extracts of lemon, cucumber and burdock to refine the skin's texture. With this moisturizer you will get effective oil-free moisture without a greasy-feel. The reason this moisturizer is so light is that is does not contain glycerin, which is a common humectant that is very hydrating in most moisturizers for drier skin types, instead it contains pentylene glycol and butylene glycol, which are lightweight humectants and skin conditioning agents that draw moisture into the skin. This makes it ideal for normal to combination and even oilier skin types (oilier skins can likely use this in winter) to protect against dehydration. I would not recommend this product for dry skin. I have dry skin and used it and it was not something that was comparable enough for me but feel that it might work better in the summer if my skin starts to feel more like "normal" skin again. The Probiotic Moisture Complex helps to keep skin hydrated, keeping the skin's microbiome happy and at a normal level. There are so many botanical extracts in this formula, but suffice it to say that the main ones in them are there to refine the skin's texture, evening it out. This is good if you have bumpy, uneven skin texture and will likely cause some exfoliation & purging of the skin. Purging means you might break out a little bit when first using this, don't worry, that means that it is working and that the product is actually ridding your skin of the dead skin cells in the pores, keep using the product and possibly add on a detoxifying mask to aid in exfoliation. In fact, increase your exfoliation by using the Dermalogica Microexfoliant, which is extremely gentle and works on just about every skin type (It happens to be one of my favorite exfoliants). Active Moist contains lemon fruit, lemon peel extract and citric acid, all of which exfoliate & detoxify the skin. Cucumber is soothing and very hydrating to the skin. Burdock extract helps to smooth and detoxify the skin.

To use: apply over damp face and throat with light upward strokes. Best when used following Multi-Active Toner. Can be applied over or mixed with prescribed dermalogica concentrated booster for additional results. It used during the day, make sure to apply a SPF over the Active Moist.

All in all, this is a great moisturizer for normal to combination skin or oilier skin and will be great for me in the summer months, as my skin is on the dry side right now. However, if you have skin that is mentioned above, try this now. It comes in two sizes, a 1.7 fl.oz./50mL for $42.00 or 3.4 fl.oz./100mL for $66.00.
