Miami Beach Bum is a company that was born from a marine scientist's need for a cream for her folliculitis. Because she was always in wet swimsuits, she developed rashes on her bum (folliculitis) and wanted a clean skincare solution. So, using her chemistry background, she created an at-home remedy using mainly plant ingredients. Voilà, Miami Beach Bum was born! It was intentionally made to be kind to the microbiome, the skin's own microbial system for protection (see below). Miami Beach Bum is crafted with the goal of bringing one's own skin health to the forefront of self-care and making women feel confident and comfortable, naturally. The line has evolved into a full collection of vegan products, that keep sustainability and good environmental practices in mind.

The microbiome is comprised of microorganisms (bacteria, yeast, protozoa), that colonize your skin, intestines and essentially every surface of the body. It plays and essential role in the natural defenses and immune system of your body and helps to keep you healthy. Research shows that the microbiome has lost diversity overtime, and this had lead to a decrease in its ability to produce essential nutrients such as Vitamins A, D, E and K. When the microbiome is out of balance skin becomes dull, dry and diseased. This is where Miami Beach Bum comes in to play. Their products are formulated with a pH of 5-5.5 to fortify the skin's natural moisture barrier, plumping it and protecting it. Each product features clean, natural plant ingredients that balance the microorganisms and replace beneficial metabolites (Vitamins, nutrients and essential fatty acids) that result in healthy, resilient skin.

Miami Beach Bum comes in three scents: Lemongrass, Orange and Mint. I tried the Lemongrass scent. Each cream has three key ingredients in it: oregano, aloe and jojoba. Oregano acts as a balancing agent. It has antibacterial, antimicrobial and antifungal properties that allow it to balance the skin's microbiome; improving common skin problems. Aloe is known to be very soothing and anti-inflammatory, as well as hydrating to the skin. It has antioxidants, natural enzymes and Vitamins A & C that help hydrate dry skin and fortify the skin's natural moisture barrier. Jojoba oil helps to improve the skin natural moisture barrier of the skin, it also soothes dry skin, has iodine in it to soothe inflammation, has Vitamins A, B, & E and is loaded with antioxidants. Other ingredients that are in the cream that are helpful are sunflower oil, which is high in Vitamin E. It is very moisturizing for the skin. So is shea butter, which is also very emollient. Next we have salicylic acid and tea tree oil, which are not only anti-bacterial but also anti-inflammatory, helping to prevent acne and folliculitis. The salicylic acid also exfoliates the skin.

The lemongrass essential oil in the Lemongrass scent has antifungal and antibacterial properties. The Orange scent has orange essential oil which has Vitamin C and antioxidants that improve the texture of the skin by promoting clarity, radiance and smoothness while reducing the signs of acne and aging. The Mint scent has spearmint oil which is an anti-inflammatory agent that helps to soothe skin, heal acne, aid dry skin and heal dermatitis. It is also an antiseptic, thus it acts to heal infections. So each scent has distinct properties and works well for different skin conditions, depending on what you have going on with your skin. The Lemongrass scent is the original. Miami Beach Bum helps to prevent the following skin conditions: dry skin, dull skin, folliculitis, body acne, eczema, psoriasis, keratosis pilaris and more. I would recommend the original Lemongrass cream for any skin condition mentioned above. The Mint would work well it you have body acne and some really bad folliculitis. The Orange would work well if you have some some hyperpigmentation you want to work on as well as any other skin conditions that are listed above, as it brightens as well as heals the skin. The Orange also improves the smoothness of the skin.

I had a normal winter bought with dry skin and some usual slight keratosis pilaris (no redness but some bumpiness) and found this cream to be very good at relieving the dryness and bumpiness. And this is no surprise. The ingredients in Miami Beach Bum are great at relieving dryness, with wonderful moisturizing and emollient oils like sunflower oil, jojoba oil and the addition of shea butter. Add to that the aloe barbadensis leaf juice, which is such a great all around ingredient that helps to ease dryness, soothes eczema, acts as an anti-inflammatory for any skin ailment like acne, folliculitis, etc. The addition of the oregano extract aids as an all around skin balancing agent. It helps to keep the skin's microbiome in check, it is a powerful anti-inflammatory agent, but needs to be diluted in the right amounts, as it is here. Salicylic acid is a renowned anti-acne agent and exfoliant that is used far and wide for the face, it is known to be very beneficial to use on the body for acne and psoriasis. Salicylic acid helps to remove dry hard skin, it helps with keratosis pilaris and soothes inflammation. I do happen to suffer from some atopic dermatitis too, but did not have any flare-ups while using this unfortunately, so I could not report on how well it would have worked. My atopic dermatitis flares up during the summer when it is hot out. All in all, this product did relieve my dry skin and helped with the bumpiness from my minor keratosis pilaris so I am very happy with it.
