Chadwick Bell Spring-Summer 2014 Face Chart

Inspiration: The Chadwick Bell Spring/Summer 2014 collection drew on designer Chadwick Bell’s roots growing up in Southern California and its surf culture in the 60's. Describing the Chadwick Bell Woman as a worldly traveler, the designer aimed to illustrate the evolution of the tough-girls of his youth who have since evolved into strong, modern women. This fresh, structured collection presented in saturated hues - ranging from natural, nude tones of ivory, pale pinks and bone, to royal blues and blacks - presented an opportunity for Lead Makeup Artist, Daniel Martin for NYX Cosmetics, in collaboration with NYX Cosmetics’ Chief Creative Director, Cristina Bartolucci, to create a playful, but chic makeup look that juxtaposed the collection’s refined and sophisticated clothing.

Face: To create the look, Martin began by applying NYX Stay Matte But Not Flat Liquid Foundation ($7.50, nyxcosmetics.com) over the entire face to cover and correct. NYX HD Concealer Wand ($5.00, nyxcosmetics.com) was then applied minimally under the eyes and on blemishes. Wanting to create a neo-matte finish to the skin, Martin dusted just the t-zone with NYX Mineral Finishing Powder ($10.00, nyxcosmetics.com) to keep the highest parts of the face, such as the cheek bones, luminous.

Eyes: The concept for the eyes was bright with natural shading and sculpture, without looking too pretty. To achieve this, Martin began with the brows using the NYX Auto Eyebrow Pencil ($4.50, nyxcosmetics.com) –first brushing up and then filling in for a natural, but defined look. The NYX Nude Matte Shadow ($4.50, nyxcosmetics.com) in Dance the Tides, Maybe Later or Blame it on Midnight (depending on skin tone) was then dusted and pressed into the lid with Martin’s finger. He chose this application method over a brush to keep the depth of the shadow a sweep vs. dense effect. Finally, Martin applied NYX’s The Curve ($15.00, nyxcosmetics.com) – an ergonomically designed liquid liner – closely and faintly to the top lash line, creating a lash, but not-a-lash finish.

Cheeks: For a subtle contouring effect, Martin sculpted the cheek bones with the NYX Nude Matte Shadow ($4.50, nyxcosmetics.com) in the same shade as used on the eyes.

Lips: Martin prepped the lip - the focal point of the look - with NYX HD Concealer Wand ($5.00, nyxcosmetics.com) applying a shade similar to the model’s skin tone on the top and a lighter shade on the bottom. NYX’s Xtreme Lip Cream (

$6.00, nyxcosmetics.com)

in Absolute Red was then applied to the top lip. Martin then lined the top lip with the NYX Slim Lip Pencil (

$3.50, nyxcosmetics.com)

in Hot Red, sharply defining the Cupid’s bow and outer edges of the lip. Wanting to create a graduated lip shade, Martin then applied NYX’s Matte Lipstick

($6.00, nyxcosmetics.com)

in Indie Flick  to the bottom lip and then lightly dusted it with NYX Single Eye Shadow

($4.50, nyxcosmetics.com)

in Hot Orange. The result was a contrasting finish and modern two-toned pout.

“My inspiration for this look was a 60's French girl at the beach who projects an effortless radiance and only needs a fabulous red lip to dress up her face,” said Daniel Martin, Lead Makeup Artist for NYX Cosmetics. “My goal was to keep the makeup fresh, with radiant sculpted skin, allowing attention to focus solely on the mouth.”
