Inspiration: The Nicholas K Spring/Summer 2014 collection was heavily influenced by Native American tribal themes. Sibling design team Nicholas and Christopher Kunz presented muted, earth-toned looks in light and airy shapes with white as a prominent color throughout. To compliment this collection, Lead Makeup Artist, Daniel Martin for NYX Cosmetics, in collaboration with NYX Cosmetics’ Chief Creative Director, Cristina Bartolucci, drew inspiration from the hip, downtown “NYX Woman” and Nicholas K’s Native-American influences, creating a makeup look that evoked a “Modern Tribal Warrior.”

Skin: To begin, Martin prepped the models with a number of skincare products including ARCONA Booster Defense Serum ($68.00, arcona.com) and ARCONA Peptide Hydrating Complex ($75.00, arcona.com). Noting the importance of prepping the face with skincare before makeup application Martin said, “a clean canvas is essential to correct uneven color and texture in the skin, allowing the makeup to really stand out.”

Face: To create the look, Martin began by applying NYX HD Concealer Wand ($5.00, nyxcosmetics.com) minimally around the face to correct any dark circles or blemishes. Next, he mixedNYX Stay Matte But Not Flat Liquid Foundation ($7.50, nyxcosmetics.com) with NYX Born to Glow Liquid Illuminator ($7.00, nyxcosmetics.com) in Gleam and applied over the entire face. NYX Mineral Finishing Powder ($10.00, nyxcosmetics.com) was then used just through the t-zone area to allow the brow and cheekbones to stay luminous under the runway lights.

Eyes: As the models donned thick headbands down the runway, Martin kept the eye makeup neutral, but used as a way to sculpt and bring attention to the facial angles. This was accomplished by mixing NYX Nude Matte Shadow ($4.50, nyxcosmetics.com) in Dance the Tides (a warm rust-brown) and Skinny Dip (a deep violet) with NYX Single Eye Shadow ($4.50, nyxcosmetics.com) inHot Orange. This sienna color combination was swept across the entire eye, up to the brow bone, and across the nose creating a modern, sunburnt look. Finally, Martin lightly shaded the brows where needed using the NYX Auto Eyebrow Pencil ($4.50, nyxcosmetics.com).

Cheeks: Martin used NYX Matte Bronzer ($9.00, nyxcosmetics.com) to sculpt and extend the neutral sweep across the eye.

The finished look brought to life the essence of the Native-American culture, in a modern, sophisticated way.
