In the past year I went through menopause and my skin took a hit. A big one. Meaning that it started to age in ways I never thought it was going to. I have taken great pains to take care of my skin throughout the years. And yes I do have some sun damage, but I was honestly taken aback at how suddenly it changed. Part of it was due to extreme stress and insomnia (which will do a number on your skin) and part of it was due to the fact that I had sun damage that was finally making its way to the surface of my skin. I also had some fine lines above my eyes from constantly having to raise my eyes up to put on mascara. Those had to go. Like now. So I turned to the new OLAY Regenerist Collagen Peptide 24 Hydrating Moisturizer.
This lightweight, fragrance-free moisturizer absorbs quickly and gives 24 hours of hydration without a greasy, sticky or heavy feeling. It contains Collagen Peptide and Vitamin B3+ (niacinamide) to transform the look of skin. The claim is that the longer one uses the formula, the better the skin will look. Is this true? Supposedly on day 1 the skin's texture will look smooth. Within 2 weeks, skin will look and feel visibly firmer and fine lines & wrinkles will be less noticeable. To use, it is recommended to smooth on morning and night for visibly firmer skin. It is recommended for normal, oily to dry/combination skin.
What are the ingredients inside that make this cream work so well? Let's explore them:
- collagen peptide: this peptide acts in the same way that naturally occurring peptides work in younger skin. As skin ages, applying this topical peptide supports your skin’s natural renewal processes, so skin's appearance is noticeably improved.
- Vitamin B3+ (niacinamide): A favorite ingredient in most serums and creams lately, this ingredient is known to help skin retain moisture keeping it seriously hydrated as well as lighten skin. Vitamin B3 can also hydrate to help with surface skin cell turnover and regeneration, as well as exfoliation to remove dull skin. Long story short, it’s a unicorn ingredient.
- glycerin: a humectant that helps to add intense moisture to the skin. This one works even better than hyaluronic acid. It goes deeper into the skin than HA.
- ProVitamin B5 (panthenol): acts as a humectant and an emollient, binding water to the skin, moisturizing and leaving it soft, smooth, and more supple. It also has anti-inflammatory properties and is involved in activating the proliferation of cells that are important for wound healing and restoring the function of the natural moisture barrier. It is particularly good for those with dry skin.
I did notice a difference my skin after several weeks. The lines above my eyes are almost completely gone. I didn't use it in the morning though. In the morning I use sunscreen and don't like to use creams without sunscreen in them no matter what. I also noticed my skin was visibly firmer. I do think this cream works as well as OLAY says it does.
OLAY is excellent skincare and one reason they are priced so well is that they don't pay the markup of having the expensive marketing campaigns, packaging, celebrity endorsements, etc., that often come with some skincare lines. But their ingredients are just the same at ingredients you will find in products that you would pay 3x as much for. Always try to get the best bang for your buck when you can. I know cosmetic chemists and they tell me that ingredients are the most important thing you can count on in skincare. I always look at ingredients first. Not the pretty packaging. Not the price. The ingredients. And this cream has great ingredients that work.
