This cookbook is by the owner of Milk Jar Cookies. And let me tell you that it is a treat. Ms. Cowan describes how she came to be the owner of her own cookie enterprise (she was recovering from spinal surgery after a lifetime spent as a gymnast, unable to compete anymore & watching the London Summer Olympics) in Los Angeles, CA. There lying in bed she finally made the decision to make her side hustle into a full time business. Since 2013 she has been the go-to for everyone in L.A. who wants delectable treats.
After reading the recipes in the cookbook I can see she made the right decision. In the book, Ms. Cowan first goes into the heart of a recipe, finding & arranging the right ingredients, making sure one is prepared for a recipe with the proper utensils: good mixing bowls, unsalted butter, the best chocolate chips, the right mixer, good cookie sheets, etc. And making sure that you read the entire recipe before even attempting to cook. Preparation is the key to success. Because baking is all about chemistry. And chemistry requires an exact science of mixing the proper ingredients in the right amounts at the right time. She even goes into detail regarding the notion of dressing up your desserts on beautiful china because things that look better taste better. And you know this is true. The eyes are the gateway to the the stomach.
Her cookbook is divided up into sections: cookies, cakes and bakes, pies, no bake treats and breakfast bakes. Each section has sinfully delicious recipes that will tempt you into epicurean abandon. I was pleasantly and delightfully surprised to see one for butterscotch pudding, which happens to be my absolute favorite!!!! There are 75 total recipes in this book and each one is sinfully, sensually delicious. Want a great recipe for pecan pie? It's in there. What about peanut butter cookies? No problem! There's even one for Hazel's German Chocolate Cake! Which I have to make. This is my new favorite book for self-indulgence. If I need a dessert I know just where to go. Now, to get to Los Angeles to visit Milk Jar Cookies!
This will make a wonderful Valentine's Day gift for should you be in the market for a new dessert cookbook. Even if you aren't, I advise you to pick it up or ask for it just for the recipes inside. they truly are one of a kind.
