In our skin we have two building blocks, collagen and elastin. As we age our skin breaks down these building block and the skin becomes less firm, more uneven in tone, develops lines and wrinkles, and actually starts to physically look older. Elastin is the building block that is hardest to rebuild, with age it disappears, so skin starts to sag. However, collagen can be rebuilt in the skin. It usually takes wounding the skin to repair collagen, which is why chemical and laser peels work so well at helping to rebuild new skin. There are other methods to help rebuild collagen though, for example using peptides in skincare. Peptides are amino acid chains that when applied to the skin work well to actually help repair the collagen in the skin. Peptide chains have molecules small enough to penetrate to the dermis. Thus when used there are less fine lines, wrinkles, skin is more plump, has more elasticity, more suppleness and looks younger overall.

Two particular peptides that are great Matrixyl 3000™ and Syn®-tacks, which are well known for their skin benefits. These peptides work quite well at helping to rebuild collagen in the skin. They help to actually accomplish all of the above: plump the skin, reduce fine line and wrinkles, increase elasticity and increase skin suppleness. The Inkey List sells them in the form of a serum, called Collagen Booster. This serum can be used twice a day, in the AM and PM as a treatment after cleansing and hydrating the skin (such as using Polyglutamic Acid). To use, apply a pea sized amount of the clear serum on skin to face and neck. If using with other serums, layer in any order. When used in the AM, use with SPF40. Because it also contains glycerin, butylene glycol and hyaluronic acid this serum will be extremely hydrating to the skin too. It primarily contains a few different types of peptides: dipeptide-5 diaminobutyroyl hydroxythreonine (Syn®-tacks), palmitoyl dipeptide-5 diamino hydroxybutyrate (helps boost collagen production), palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7 (increases skin elasticity) and palmitoyl tripeptide-1 (repairs visible skin damage). These peptides work synchronistically to help with the signs of aging in the skin. The Inkey List recommends this product for normal skin, however I have dry skin and have used it in my routine without any problems. I would recommend this lightweight serum for any skin type, even acneic skin. They do not list if it is non-comedogenic, so for acneic skin I would say you could use it. However if you have acne only in certain areas, then it is likely hormonal in nature and this might not set it off. These ingredients in general are not known to be acneic.

Because of this works as an anti-aging serum, it is great for anyone over the age of 30. By this time collagen has already started to break down in the skin and you need to work at reviving it with peptides. I would even go so far as to add it when you are in your mid-20's. Make sure to wear a broad spectrum SPF40 during the daytime or you are not really counteracting the benefits of the serum. I love how well this plumps up the skin, making the fine lines I do have disappear, I have been using it for about a month and had minimal lines above my eye due to always raising my eyes to put on mascara and this serum really helped to ease their visibility. I am happy with the results. Not only that but it is also quite hydrating too, so you kill two birds with one stone if you have normal to combination skin. If your skin is drier, add something else prior to this, such as the Polyglutamic Acid I mentioned. That will help to really plump up the skin.
