Review: Sally Hansen Hair Remover Wax Strip Kit

DSC07705

As women, we often find ourselves with hair in the wrong places. That hair just increases as we get older. So,we have to find ways to remove it. There is waxing in a salon, which is a great way. However, that is effective if not expensive. There is also sugaring, which is also effective, but also expensive. Finally there is electrolysis and laser hair removal, but those ways are extremely expensive.

That leaves hair removal at home. For this I have found the Sally Hansen Hair Removal Wax Strip Kit ($6.79, Rite Aid), which includes 34 wax strips, Azulene Finishing Oil and Instructions. The 34 wax strips vary in size, all strips are double sided, making 2 wax strips on each: 2 large, 6 medium and 9 small. The large strips are for the bikini area, the medium are for the upper lip or chin and the small are for the brow. The Azulene finishing oil included is for the redness and irritation associated with after waxing. Azulene comes from Chamomile and is an anti-inflammatory. The instructions are very specific. They tell the user that she/he must take the strips and warm them in the palm of their hands to warm the wax. This is done with friction. Then they are applied wax side down. Press down on the wax strip, firmly. Stretch skin tautly. This is very important, the user then takes the strip and very quickly removes from the face. Like a band-aid, but quicker! Most of the hair should be gone. There are instructions for each part to be worked on. Make sure the area is clean and dry. The hair should 1/4” long (21 days growth) before waxing. Do not use on skin that has been treated by Retin-A, Glycolic acid, etc.

I found that I could go back with the strips and get the hair that did not come off the first time. Usually with waxing, one cannot go back and use the strip a second time. However, these strips are not as strong as regular waxing strips that are used in salons. Most of the hair comes off the first time. I will say that these strips are NOT perfect. I did have to go back and do it a second time for just one little area. It does make a difference if you don’t pull the strip quickly enough. The strip has to be pulled really fast and hard. Also, I really would not recommend usage if you are on Retin-A or any drug that specifically exfoliates skin. In this case you could pull your skin off. I have seen it happen! What I really like is the Azulene finishing oil. The skin is raw after waxing and needs something that helps to “cool” it down and kill the redness and inflammation, and this does a very good job. Using this, I found that my skin went back to normal almost instantly. I like that I don’t have to go to a salon for my upper lip. I am certified in waxing and sugaring and feel that if you cannot make it to the salon, these strips are an acceptable substitute. The Sally Hansen Hair Remover Wax Strip Kit gets a thumbs up from me!
