Since it is Memorial Day Weekend, I thought I would kick off my sun protection round-up. I have a number of sunscreens to review and I wanted to get them done now that it is 'unofficially' the start of summer! I have three brands that I am going to cover.

Let's start with MyChelle Replenishing Solar Defense Body Lotion SPF50 Broad Spectrum Anti-Aging. This sunscreen is 100% mineral containing 21% zinc oxide and no other sunscreen agents. It is very hydrating for the skin, unlike most zinc oxide sunscreens. Because it is mineral based, those who are allergic to chemical based sunscreens can use this sunscreen without fear. Mineral sunscreens reflect the sun off of the skin while chemical sunscreens absorb the sun's rays into the skin. It melts into skin delivering a UVA/UVB broad spectrum sun protection without leaving behind any white residue or greasiness. This lotion is rich is Coconut Oil and Shea Butter, that leaves skin feeling instantly nourished and hydrated. Also, it is water resistant, which means when applied you can swim in it for up to 80 minutes. It does not contain any GMOs, Parabens, Petroleum, Phthalates, Sulfates, Ureas, Artificial Fragrances or Artificial Colors. Using this helps prevent sunburn. If used as directed, with other sun protection measures it decreases the risk of skin cancer and photoaging (skin aging) caused by the sun. This sunscreen is REEF SAFE!To Use: Shake well. Apply liberally and evenly all over the body and face. Make sure to apply at least 15 minutes prior to sun exposure. For daily use, allow product to absorb completely before applying make-up. This gives the zinc oxide a chance to metabolize with the skin. Make sure to reapply after 80 minutes of swimming, perspiration. Or reapply after 2 hours of sun exposure. Do not use on children under 6 months of age. Spending any time in the sun increases your risk of skin cancer and photoaging. To decrease this risk, regularly use a sunscreen with a broad spectrum SPF of 30 or higher and other sun protection measures including:

  • Limit your time in the sun, especially during its strongest time; from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
  • Wear long-sleeve shirts, pants, hats and sunglasses.
I found this product to be surprisingly light considering how much zinc oxide is in it. Normally when I encounter a sunscreen with this much zinc oxide, I think it's going to go on like diaper rash cream, but Replenishing Solar Defense Body Lotion SPF50 Broad Spectrum Anti-Aging goes on so light and it absorbs very quickly that you don't even notice it's on. There is a faint fragrance, a whiff of cocoa butter possibly but other than that it feels like a body lotion going on. It is very hydrating for the skin and this is great, because I do feel it is something I could use on my face without it clogging my pores. I really like this sunscreen and recommend it for those with dry, normal, combination and mature skins.
