The Compassionate Chick's Guide To DIY Beauty, written by Sunny Subramanian and Chrystle Fiedler, is part DIY vegan beauty how to and part self-improvement manifesto. It showcases non-toxic, rejuvenating and restorative skincare and beauty products that you can whip up in your own kitchen with simple ingredients for pennies per treatment. Why spend $40 on a facial mask or $8 on a package of organic facial wipes when you can make these products yourself for just a $1 or $2? With Sunny's witty whimsical, edgy and inspirational style, easy-to-follow instructions and step-by-step photos that detail how to make and use the products, this book is a delight to read and use. The recipes are easy and inexpensive. And they provide real beauty results. Here's a recipe I'm particularly fond of:
COFFEE BODY SCRUB
You will need a jar with lid.
1 cup/250 mL freshly ground coffee or leftover coffee grounds. Freshly ground coffee is ideal, as it has more caffeine in it.
6 tbsp./90mL olive, jojoba or coconut oil.
3 tbsp./45 mL packed vegan brown sugar
1. In a medium bowl, stir together ingredients until well combined. Spoon into jar.
2. Using hands, massage a small amount of scrub all over skin in the shower; using circular motions.
3. Rinse skin with warm water and pat dry with a towel. Follow with your favorite body moisturizer.
4. Store in the shower for up to 6 months.
Coffee not only smells great. It is rich is antioxidants and acts as an anti-inflammatory. The caffeine it contains when combined with massage, firms and tightens the skin. Massage also stimulates proper blood and lymph flow. Olive, jojoba or coconut oil act as moisturizers and brown sugar as an exfoliant.
The authors of this book are Sunny Subramanian and Chrystle Fiedler. Sunny Subramanian was the first vegan beauty blogger to hit the scene back in 2007. She runs the website Vegan Beauty Review, where she writes about the latest and greatest cruelty-free products, fashion, food, and everything vegan in between. Sunn has been featured in LA Times, Women's World Magazine, Allure and numerous other publications. Sunny has worked for PETA. Having been vegan herself since 2000, her main goal is to show the world that veganism can be fun beautiful and delicious. In addition to being a hardcore cruelty-free beauty junkie, she also has an affinity for all things kitty related, pink, glittery and sweet, especially cupcakes. She resides in Portland, OR. Chrystle Fiedler has written several books, and her articles featuring natural remedies have appeared in dozens of national publications. She is a freelance journalist specializing in natural remedies, alternative medicine and holistic health and healthing. Her many consumer magazine articles have appeared in USA Today's Green Living, Natural Health, Remedy, Mother Earth Living, Spirituality & Health and Prevention. She is also the author/co-author of seven non-fiction health titles including the Country Almanac of Home Remedies, Beat Sugar Addiction Now! and the Natural Remedies Mystery series. Chrystle resides in Long Island, NY.
My thoughts on this book are that is is well written, thought out and the recipes are mostly very easy to do. The matter remains with getting the ingredients and having all of them around to use. Yes, in the long run it becomes less expensive to do your own vegan skincare and cosmetics. In the short term, it is expensive to purchase the products needed to start out the process. However, if you are dedicated to doing this, by all means go for it. These recipes are easy enough for anyone who can cook or craft. If you have done Home Economics class or whatever they call it these days you can do the recipes in this book. Ms. Subramanian kept them intentionally at a level that most people could do them so that everyone could do them. The ones that I have read through and tried out so far are extremely easy to accomplish and the other ones that I read through I feel I could accomplish easily enough.
