As an Esthetician, I feel very comfortable giving myself peels. I often refer to myself as the "peel queen" because I have so many different kinds of alpha hydroxy acids here and use them all the time to give myself a glow to the skin. Peels do so much for the skin that they really are worthwhile to take a look into and possibly do at home or in the salon or dermatologist/plastic surgeon's office. Let us look at the peel I would like to discuss today.

The company Perfect Image has a number of different peels out and some of them are great for at home use, while others are specifically for professional use only. Today we will be looking at their Glycolic 30% Gel Peel. This peel is a professionally formulated peel, designed to help reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles, uneven skin tone, lackluster skin and any other signs of aging such as hyperpigmentation. It is also an exfoliant that removes the upper layer of dead skin cells so that the underneath fresh layer of skin can show through. Retinol (Vitamin A) has been shown to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and it also helps to remove dead skin cells for a more rejuvenated look. Green Tea and Chamomile extracts have been added to help provide synergistic antioxidant benefits to the skin. Cucumber extract, a natural antioxidant rich in vitamins, minerals and enzymes helps provide added skin brightening and tightening properties. By using the peel, you are helping your skin to produce more collagen, which is one of the building blocks of the skin and it breaks down as we age. Helping to rebuild collagen actually helps to reduce the look of fine lines, wrinkles, uneven skin tone and hyperpigmentation.

To use this peel, make sure all makeup has been removed from the face and the skin has been cleansed. Also make sure skin is dry. If skin is extra oily, you can use a cotton pad and apply isopropyl alcohol to the skin to remove any extra oils. Do not use alcohol on skin if it is sensitive. Take a cotton pad and apply the peeling gel to the cotton pad then apply to the face in circular motions. Avoid the eyes and mouth area. LEAVE ON FOR ONE MINUTE ONLY. Then rinse off with cool water or a solution of 1 cup water and 1/2 teaspoon baking soda.

As you encounter the peel on subsequent treatments, the peel can be left on for longer as tolerated. Do not leave on if you feel extreme burning, see redness, frosting of the skin or any sort of sensitivity. This is a superficial peel only. If you notice the above, stop use and call a dermatologist.

Sunburn Alert: Glycolic acid and Retinol make skin more sensitive to the sun. Make sure to wear a sunscreen of at least a SPF30 or higher when outside. DO NOT GO OUT WITHOUT SUNSCREEN. You can have a very bad reaction on your skin as it is more sensitive and you can end up with a rash or bad sunburn.

What to expect from this peel? You should expect some mild tingling during the application process and then afterwards some dryness. Use a hydrating moisturizer after the peel. And a serum with hyaluronic acid too. After using the peel you should experience some mild flaking of the skin, some mild redness, mild irritation and mild acne breakouts. You will also notice that your skin will be softer, fine lines will disappear, wrinkles will look less deep, your skin tone will look more even and brighter and hyperpigmentation will disappear too.

I feel that this peel is a good choice for all skin types. Even sensitive skins. Mainly because it is only left on the skin for a short period of time and the fact that it has antioxidants in it to help soothe the skin, as Chamomile extract can be very soothing to the skin.
