If you are a regular reader of my blog then you know I am a huge fan of Supergoop sunscreens. I purchase just about everything they come out with. Their facial sunscreens are the best on the market. as they are made to be worn with or without makeup, are of the latest technology and work well as makeup primers too. So, of course I wanted to try out Supergoop's latest breakthrough, Mineral Sheer Screen SPF30

This sunscreen is a lightweight, sheer, all non-nano mineral sunscreen with a broad spectrum SPF30 PA+++* that can be worn alone or under makeup. What is also wonderful about this product is that it is also a light moisturizer too. Mineral Sheer Screen SPF30 is so weightless that it feels barely there. This product contains 17.5% zinc oxide, which is a mineral sunscreen that works to deflect the sun's rays away from the body instead of absorbing them like a chemical sunscreen does, which is essentially the main difference between the two. It glides on effortlessly and leaves behind a smooth, natural finish that works well as a primer under makeup. Developed with SheerMatrix Technology, the super sheer formula suspends the zinc oxide molecules in a matrix without compromising efficacy of the sunscreen, so it instantly blends to a uniform, sleek finish. What makes it so great is that it works for all skin types, and is very hydrating to boot. The formula contains the following ingredients: glycerin, squalane, aloe leaf juice and bush clover extract. Glycerin is a wonderful humectant that penetrates deep into the dermis and keeps the skin hydrated all day long. Squalane is naturally present in the skin and it leaves skin feeling soft without a greasy residue. Aloe leaf juice helps to moisturize and smooth the skin. Bush clover extract acts to help protect the skin against free radicals and oxidative stress brought on by blue light (from computers and smartphones). The SheerMatrix Technology is really quite innovative in that it features a web-like structure that makes this sunscreen weightless & sheer, unlike other mineral sunscreens out there. Zinc Oxide and the other ingredients are suspended in the matrix, allowing the formula to 'stretch' and to become ultra-lightweight without compromising its performance. (*SPF indicates the protection from UVB rays and PA indicates protection from UVA rays. PA means the Protection Grade of UVA rays and is an Asian system that is widely used now. It is based on the Persistent Pigment Darkening (PPD) reaction reading at 2-4 hours of sun exposure. The protective grade of sunscreen is often leveled as PA+, PA++ and PA+++. More plus signs indicate the more protection from UVA rays. https://bit.ly/3cQnMvb)

To use: apply generously and evenly as the last step in your skincare regimen during the daytime, before makeup and 15 minutes before sun exposure. It is best to reapply at least every two hours. Use a water-resistant sunscreen if swimming or sweating.

I do love this sunscreen, because it is very sheer yet hydrating & I firmly believe that any skin type could, in fact, use this product (which is rare but welcome in the sunscreen world). However, the only problem with it, is that it is not sweat/water resistant. There are mineral sunscreens out there that are, this is not one of them. Unfortunately to make this product lightweight they had to give that facet up. If you are going to apply makeup on top of this product you cannot reapply the sunscreen two hours later and are pretty much out of luck. This is a caveat emptor of this product. While it works well as a hydrating primer under makeup, if you plan to be in the sun for a while and are wearing makeup I would recommend wearing a stronger product or not wearing makeup at all. I also would recommend wearing a large hat to protect your face from the sunlight. That is because I don't recommend long-term sun exposure (having had skin cancer twice now). Unless you have melanin-rich skin that is and even then I still recommend sunscreen to avoid hyperpigmentation issues. What I do love about Mineral Sheer Screen SPF30 is that it goes on so lightweight, is hydrating enough and is extremely sheer, yet I can wear it over a serum and my dry skin doesn't feel very dry & tight. I really do think all skin types (even acneic skin) can wear this sunscreen and not have issues with it. It is actually listed as non-comedogenic on the box, so it will not clog pores. I am not sure if it causes white cast or not, but it likely does not as Supergoop products are always formulated for all skin tones. That is another great thing I like about the line.

Would I recommend this product? Good question. I love the way it wears. I love that you can wear it under makeup. But you will have to use Supergoop's Defense Refresh Mist SPF40 ($30 https://bit.ly/3aRpImq) after 2 hours have passed if you are wearing makeup. This continuous setting spray is a great way to wear SPF over makeup. In fact it is the only guaranteed way to wear SPF over makeup without messing it up. So yes, purchase this product but beware of how you are going to wear it. Caveat emptor.
